Lab Based Testing - QA and Verification Print E-mail

Why do we test our product in a test lab prior to shipment? Apart from ensuring that we deliver a quality product to our customers, which enhances our company’s reputation, wins more business and instills pride in the product that we produce, does test add value?

How does lab-based testing save you costs and increase profits?

Cost Savings are derived from the following:

Capability How Often Has This Happened?
Software bugs can be replicated with 100% repeatability Your Field Engineer had to return to an International destination, to fix a bug a 2nd time
SUT/DUT tested with all expected conditions – Greater Test Coverage: Equipment experiences greater range of User Behavior, so fewer failures occur in Operations The system functioned during system acceptance but failed afterward, requiring a 2nd trip to the customer site
Performance measured during full system load How often has a problem occurred in the field due to user load? This is something that could require at least a software update, or even a system redesign.
Is the bottleneck solved by designed scalability or something else?
All KPI’s are constantly measured, while hundreds of different parameters are changed in the SUT/DUT How often did you lose the deal, because you were not able to prove the performance of your system under full load?
Extensive interoperability beyond that possible in the field is completed before the Acceptance Test in front of the customers How many person-days have you spent in the field doing Interoperability Testing with another vendor?

All these benefits are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replicate in the field. They cause intermittent problems which take weeks to isolate in the field, where the conditions of the failure cannot be replicated on demand.

Costs are Saved as follows:

  1. International overseas or Domestic Field Service Engineer days are reduced in field.
  2. Fewer calls to Customer Support Center means fewer people needed to answer calls.
  3. Testing is automated after the first run, meaning substantially less manual effort expended.
  4. Lab Engineers can focus on tasks that add greater value, and are more motivated and productive.

Incremental and Early Revenue

  1. Win More Business
    1. Vendor is able to prove equipment performance claims versus competitors.
    2. Announce full interoperability of a new mobile, offering the opportunity to win at the expense of competitors.
    3. Allows you to prove system-wide KPI, SLA or benchmarks in a repeatable, predictable and controlled environment.
  2. Receive Earlier Revenues
    1. System is accepted earlier. Earlier payment means a reduction on debtor days.
    2. Customer enhances their network and makes repeat purchases earlier, reducing your financing costs and reducing ‘C-Executive’ time during fund-raising.
  3. Customer Satisfaction enhanced, due to:
    1. Fewer problems in the field, due to better quality software releases. Makes repeat purchases.
    2. Quick Replication and Earlier Proactive Detection of problems in the lab, resulting in faster software fixes.
